Sliding Gate Repair in Middle Georgia
Your slide gate is grinding, dragging, or sitting half open with a chain hanging loose. Nobody gets in or out, the yard is open, and the last company you called only does swing gates.
Slide gates fail differently than swing gates. They fail at the rollers, the track, the drive and the footing. Know what the noise means and you know what the fix costs.
Why Slide Gate Problems Get Misdiagnosed
Most people are told the operator is bad. Usually it is fine and it is dragging a gate that no longer rolls freely. That matters to your wallet. A roller job is a few hundred dollars. A commercial operator is thousands. Replace the motor without fixing what binds the gate and you kill the new one too.
Who We Are
Byron Fence has repaired and built slide gates across Middle Georgia since 2006. Family-owned, based in Byron, and we answer the phone. We diagnose on site, show you the worn part, and quote first.
What Each Symptom Usually Means
- Loud grinding or squealing. Worn roller bearings. The races are dry or pitted, so the wheel skids instead of rolling. Caught early it is rollers. Left alone it chews up the track.
- The gate jumps or hops in one spot. Debris packed in the V-track, a flattened section of track, or a roller with a flat spot. Rocks, red clay and ice collect in V-track, and a frozen track stops a gate cold.
- The gate drags and the leading edge sits low. The frame is sagging. On a track gate that means a failed roller or bent track. On a cantilever gate the counterbalance geometry shifted or the truck rollers are worn unevenly.
- A rattling chain, or the gate lurches and slips. The chain has stretched, gone loose, or is jumping teeth on the sprocket. On belt drives the belt is stretched or the tensioner backed off. Loose chain also lets the gate coast past its stop.
- The gate stops short or runs past the opening. Limit switches drifted. Mechanical limits move as the chain stretches. Magnetic and encoder limits lose position after a power event.
- On a cantilever gate, the top leans in or out. Roller assemblies are misaligned or a bearing failed on one side. Those trucks carry the whole gate, so misalignment speeds the wear.
- It binds at the same spot every cycle and the concrete by the post is cracked. The footing shifted. Middle Georgia clay swells and shrinks with the seasons, and a leaning post throws the track out of level.
- The gate opens but will not close, or reverses for no reason. A safety loop or photo eye. Loops break when pavement cracks, and a broken loop reads as a vehicle parked in the opening forever. Dirty photo eyes do the same.
- The motor hums but the gate does not move. Something is bound, or the drive has disconnected. Stop pressing the button. Every attempt heats the motor.
Not sure which one you have? Call or text 478-960-5382 and describe the noise. We can usually tell you before we get there.
Track gates roll on a V-track in the driveway, so debris is the enemy. Cantilever gates hang from roller trucks and never touch the ground, so alignment is everything. Most plant and truck yard gates around Macon and Warner Robins are cantilever.

Your Three Steps
- Call or text 478-960-5382. Tell us the gate type and what it is doing.
- We diagnose on site and quote before we start. You see the worn part and the price.
- We fix it, usually in one visit. Rollers, chain and common hardware ride on the truck.
We repair slide gates in Byron, Macon, Warner Robins, Perry and Fort Valley, and for gate work we travel up to 90 minutes from Macon.
What It Looks Like Fixed
The gate rolls quiet and level, opens the full span, stops where it should, and closes behind every vehicle. Your crew stops propping it open.
If You Wait
A dragging gate overheats the operator and turns a roller repair into a full replacement. A gate stuck open is an unsecured site. A worn cantilever assembly can eventually drop a very heavy gate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my sliding gate off track?
Usually a failed roller, debris packed into the V-track, or a shifted footing that put the track out of level. Sometimes a forklift bumped the gate and bent a guide. We check rollers, track level and footing before touching the operator, because reseating the gate without fixing the cause means it comes off again.
How much does sliding gate repair cost?
The diagnostic is commonly $95 to $195. Roller and bearing replacement runs $200 to $600, track cleaning and realignment $250 to $700, and chain or belt drive replacement $300 to $900. A cantilever roller assembly rebuild runs $800 to $2,500, and a commercial duty operator replacement $2,200 to $6,000.
Can you repair my slide gate instead of replacing it?
Almost always. Frames, posts and operators outlast rollers, chain and limit hardware by years, so the fix is normally wear parts. If a frame is bent past straightening or a footing has failed, we show you why and price both options.
Why does my gate open but refuse to close?
That points at a safety device, not the motor. A broken vehicle loop, a cracked loop lead, or a dirty photo eye tells the operator something is in the opening, so it holds the gate open. We test loops and eyes first on any gate that opens but will not close.
Do you work on cantilever gates?
Yes. Cantilever failures are specific: worn or misaligned roller trucks, a leaning support post, a shifted counterbalance. We rebuild roller assemblies and reset alignment rather than replace the gate when the frame is sound.
