Gate entry options and the honest tradeoffs

Most people need one of these.

• Wired keypad. The most reliable. Runs off the operator, no batteries. Best when the gate already has power and conduit. Usually holds a few codes.
• Wireless keypad. No trenching, quick to install. Runs on batteries and radio. Range drops in summer heat and heavy brush, so mounting distance matters.
• Cellular callbox with app control. A visitor presses one button, your phone rings, you open the gate from anywhere. Needs cell signal at the gate and a monthly data plan.
• Video intercom. You see who is there before you open.
• Telephone entry. For apartments and storage yards. Holds a tenant directory and hundreds of codes.
• Fob and card readers. Best when you want a record of who came in, and want to cut off one person without changing everybody's code.

Why gate keypads fail in Georgia

Keypads live outside in heat, humidity and lightning. The usual causes:

• Moisture in the housing after the gasket dries out
• Lightning damage to the keypad or the control board it wires into
• Worn buttons where the same four digits get pressed for years
• Dead backup batteries in wireless units
• Corroded low voltage wire at an underground splice
• Weak cell signal or a lapsed data plan on a callbox

Half the keypad calls we get in Macon and Warner Robins turn out to be wiring or power, not the keypad. Worth checking before you buy hardware.

What it looks like when it works

A friend pulls up, punches four digits, and drives in. The propane driver has his own code that you delete when the season ends. You are at work in Perry and you buzz the plumber in from your phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you add a keypad to a gate opener I already have?

Almost always, yes. Most gate operators have a terminal for an external device like a keypad or callbox. We check the operator, wiring and available power on site, then quote the add-on. It is usually cheaper than a new install.

How many codes can a gate keypad hold?

It depends on the unit. A basic residential keypad may hold one code or a handful. Cellular callboxes and telephone entry systems hold hundreds and let you add or delete them from an app. Tell us how many people need access and we will size it right.

Do I need power run to the gate for a keypad?

Not always. Wireless keypads run on batteries and talk to the operator by radio, so they work where there is no power at the post. Wired keypads are more reliable and need low voltage wire back to the operator. If the gate has no power at all, we can talk about solar.

My keypad worked and now it does nothing. Is it dead?

Maybe not. Dead keypads are often a wiring, power or control board problem rather than the keypad itself. Lightning and moisture cause most of what we see. We diagnose on site and tell you straight whether the part is worth replacing.
